New tango* salón classes for beginners and improvers (Intermediate I) will commence in Crescent Art Centre, Belfast on Friday 22nd of January 2010 running for 9 weeks (last classes running on Friday 19th of March, 2010). Tango salón is danced in milongas (tango clubs) all over the world from Buenos Aires to Tokyo. The objectives of the classes are as follows:

Beginners class
To familiarize the students with the basic steps and routines of tango salón, and enable them to successfully dance the material taught with music. Class will focus on elements of partner communication (leading/following), posture and footwork. Students can enroll with or without a partner.

Improvers class (Intermediate I)
A continuation of the beginners class to develop further skills of partner communication, partner footwork and elegant movement. Students are recommended to enrol in couples as the class requires distinctive roles. Fundamentals of the milonga** dance (distinctive to the "milonga club"** and to tango) will also be introduced.
Students who have successfully finished a circle of a Beginners classes recently with any tango instructor locally or abroad and/or have been dancing for at least 3 months are eligible to enroll.

It is highly recommended that ladies wear comfortable smart casual clothes (preferably dress, but even trousers is ok), and high heel shoes (e.g. sandals, but NOT spike heels) and gentlemen wear street shoes with leather sole (NOT rubber soles).
Also, since tango involves close embrace of the partners with sometimes physical contact of the faces (in the milonguero style), please ensure a clean body and mouth (fresh breath), but without excessive perfume or lotions. As tango is the epitome of romance, elegance and seduction between a man and a woman, respect for each one's partner will help keep the magic of tango live!

*tango: A term used by Afro-Montevidean coloured people which comes from tangó, tambor, or the Latin tangir, tocar (touch), palpar (feel). In ancient Spanish it meant to play an instrument. According to some theories, the term may derive from tang, which in one African language means to feel, to touch or to come close. In the Colonial period, coloured people called their percussion drumheads tango. [Benzecry Sabá: Glosario Tango Danza, p.138, Abrazos books, 2004]
**milonga: Place where tango, Vals and Milonga are danced. Originally they were danced in cafetines in the suburbs, and in gambling and dancing houses. Today they are danced in dance halls or milongas in Buenos Aires, the rest of Argentina and the rest of the world. [Benzecry Sabá: Glosario Tango Danza, p.120, Abrazos books, 2004]
