Hi All,

Things are piling up ready for the “new” season after the summer break. Whether you’re itching to feed your Tango addiction, or you haven’t quite got hooked yet and are wondering whether to give it another go (go on, life’s too short to sit in front of the TV on a Monday night), there’s something for you. Read the detail below, but here's the summary of what's in this newsletter:

1. BATS promotion St. George’s Market – Saturday 29th August
2. Last Tuesday Practica 1st Sept., 8pm.
3. Weekly classes re-start with a visiting guest teacher from Buenos Aires, 7th Sept.
4. Next BATS monthly Milonga is on Saturday 26th September
5. Some BBC Tango clips
6. Non-BATS events

Feel free to forward this on to anyone else who you think might be interested. In fact, it’s only by keeping the numbers up that we can afford to bring professional teachers to you, so please have a good hard think if there are any family, friends, or colleagues who you could persuade along. If you want removed from this circulation, just let me know.

Thanks,

1. BATS promotion St. George’s Market – Saturday 29th August

In an effort to promote the re-start of our weekly Monday classes, BATS will be doing a quick demo in St. George’s Market this Saturday (29th) from 9.30-10am. The aim is obviously to catch people’s eye with the dancing and to then give out flyers to them. If you want to be part of the (informal) demo and/or help engage the passers-by, then please email me back today/tomorrow (so we know who is coming). All help welcome.

2. Last Tuesday Practica 1st Sept., 8pm.

Next week (1st Sept.) will be the last Tuesday Practica, in The Edge from 8-10pm. For those who haven’t been coming over the summer, it’ll be a good chance to brush off the cobwebs before the classes re-start. Let us know if you would like a Practica night to continue (probably on a different night of the week) once the regular class re-starts – you can never get enough practice!

3. Weekly classes re-start with a visiting guest teacher from Buenos Aires, 7th Sept.
The new season of weekly Monday classes starts on 7th September, with a special visiting professional teacher from Buenos Aires. For the month of September only, the classes will be taken by Marcelo Almiron, accompanied by Monina. (After September, we will have another teacher to inspire you).

Marcelo Almiron: Since 2003 he has been teaching and performing in festivals all around Europe. In Argentina Marcelo Almiron has taught in the most important tango schools: Escuela Argentina de Tango, Tango Brujo, Made inTango, Viejo Correo and Milonguera.

Marcelo’s style can be described as authentic Traditional Tango (“milonguero”), but he also uses the elements of the modern tendencies of Tango Nuevo, thus forming his unique fusion.

His vast experience in teaching & dancing tango for more than 18 years combine passionate expression and great professionalism. These are reflected in his art-creating way of dancing tango. In his classes he offers his sharp and deep vision of all dimensions of this dance.

The classes will be the usual format:

Beginners 7.00 – 8.30pm
Practica 8.30 – 8.45pm
Improvers 8.45 – 10.15pm
Practica 10.15– 10.30pm

Cost - £7 for one class, £10 for both (Student/Concession: £5/£8 – please show ID).

Usual venue details: the main upstairs hall of City Church, 12-24 University Avenue (on the left as you head down the Avenue away from Botanic - there's a large white church, then City Church is a red brick building a few doors further, opposite the Spar). The hall is above the “Common Grounds" café, but enter through the double doors round the corner – ring the bell if closed. Here's a link to a map:

4. Next BATS monthly Milonga is on Saturday 26th SeptemberAlthough we normally hold our monthly Milonga on the third Saturday of the month (and we will continue to in the future), for September only we’ve put it back to the fourth Saturday i.e. 26th Sept. Same venue (The Edge), same time 9pm-12+.

5. Some BBC Tango clipsRather than some more YouTube clips, I had a look through the Beeb’s recent Tango information and found a few interesting clips:

This shows some excerpts from the current Tango Championships:

This one shows the current everyday Tango scene and its recent history:

This is a news article describing how Swine Flu is hitting the Tango tourism industry:

6. Non-BATS events
A. Not Tango, but ....
Although nothing to do with Tango, this is a show (this Saturday, 29th) by our very own Maeve:

The show is a fundraiser for my friend, Aaron, who is going to study musical theatre in a fantastic theatre school (the Italia Conti) in London in September. We have created and organised the show ourselves and are now hoping that people will come to see it! It's a version of 'Romeo and Juliet' (some text and some dance), an experiment.

An experimental piece of theatre collaborating Shakespeare’s text with contemporary dance, bringing you the greatest love story ever told ... ROMEO AND JULIET.

Saturday 29th August, 7.30pm, Belvoir Players’ Studio, Belvoir Drive, Belvoir Estate, Belfast. Tickets £8 (concession £5) reserved at romeojulietproduction@live.co.uk or phone 07842066685.
